New Beginnings - Surgeon X #1

by Matt Puddy Image titles always raise an eyebrow for me as, more often than not, they will come out of left field with something different. This is exactly the case with Surgeon X. As with most visages of the future, this one is bleak - but not for the typical post nuclear, zombie infested, broken society wasteland. In fact it’s quite the opposite, and a lot of every day life is continuing as normal. It’s only when you are sick or injured that things are taking a massive turn for the worse. For years the evolution of disease has...

New Beginnings - Blue Beetle Rebirth #1

by Matt Puddy As part of the new round of Rebirth titles, Blue Beetle is out and on the shelves this week. Blue Beetle isn’t a hero I know a lot about, so this was going to make Keith Giffen’s reboot of the title an interesting read for me. The story is quite a conflict in a variety of ways. Initially you have the obvious fight between the Beetle and two powered individuals called Rack and Ruin. On top of that you have fighting friends and the massive clash between our hero Jaime Reyes and (former) Blue Beetle Ted Kord....

New Beginnings - Mae #1

by Matt Puddy Mae is a brand new title from Dark Horse written and drawn by Gene Ha, who some of you might know from a few DC projects like Blackest Night or Flashpoint: Project Superman. The other notable mention for Ha and this comic is that Dark Horse selected his work after he successfully crowdfunded the project through Kickstarter in a mere 36 hours! With that in mind it does make for an exciting read before you’ve even gotten to the first page. Mae opens with a retrospective, stepping nine years into the past. Mae is left wondering what...

New Beginnings - Mirror's Edge Exordium #1

Posted by Proud Lion Contributor on

by Matt Puddy Back in 2008 Electronic Arts released a game which made a fairly large crater when it landed. That game was Mirror’s Edge. Released a year after Assassin’s Creed, another game which heavily featured a free running aspect, Mirror’s Edge was built around parkour and set the interest level high for players. The game and comic setting mirror (no pun intended) each other exactly, and both are set in a near future dystopian setting. Information is crucial in this day and age, and also easily stolen when transmitted digitally. This world uses "Runners", old fashioned human couriers who skip...

New Beginnings - We Are Robin #1

Posted by Proud Lion Contributor on

by Matt Puddy It’s fair to say that Scott Snyder’s Endgame certainly threw a spanner in the works when it comes to Gotham City and the whole Bat family. With a rather large, Bruce-shaped hole left behind, it was inevitable someone would try to fill the void. It is only minutes after being shipped into another foster home when we see Duke sneak out and hit the streets on a quest for justice. This time he bites off more than he can chew by plunging himself into the middle of an underground cult, leaving himself exposed to a horde set...
